Consolidation test is un-dimentional test considered extremely important in soil mechanics. Sample taken from adjacent areas of a single site show differential settlement even when tested using same techniques. Soil of similar strength may show varying consolidation. Samples are very carefully prepared and vertical settlement of the specimen in saturated or drained conditions carefully recorded when known load is applied. SPECIFICATION:

Originally developed by Bruce Marshall, a highway engineer in U.S.A later on standardized by ASTM. Generally the test is applicable to hot mix designs using bitumen and aggregates upto a maximum size of 25 mm.
In this method the resistance to plastic deformation of cylindrical specimen of bituminous mixture is measured when the same is loaded atperiphery at 5 cm per min. This test procedure is used in designing and evaluating bituminous paving mixes. The test procedure is extensively used in routine test programmes for paving jobs There are two major features of the Marshall method of designing mixes namely.
Density – voids analysis
Stability – flow tests.
The marshall stability of mix is defined as a maximum load carried by a compacted specimen at a standard test temperature of 60 deg.C. The flow value is deformation the marshall test specimen under goes during the loading upto the maximum load, in 0.25 mm units. In this test and attempt is made to determine optimum binder content for the type of aggregate mix and traffic intensity. The apparatus consists of: 1. A loading unit motorized, capacity 5000 kgf with two telescopic pillars and an adjustable cross head Limit switches are fitted inside to control upward or downward movement of the pillars. On – off reversing switch and indicator lamps are on the front side while a hand wheel to manulally move the pillars minute operated on 230 Volts A.C.

Shrinkage Limit is the maximum water content at which a reduction in water content does not cause an appreciable reduction in volume of the soil mass. At shrinkage limit, on further reduction in water, air enters into the voids of soils and thus keeps the volume constant. Flash & Fire Point Apparatus / Pensky-Martens Apparatus For determining the flash point of fuel oils and lubricating oil, bitumen other than cutback bitumen and suspension of solids in liquid, having a flash point above 49°C.
The oil cup is made of brass, fitted with a thermally insulated lifting handle. The cup lid, with insulated handle, is fitted with two opposite wedge cams, which engage under pillars secured to the cup flange. This feature facilitates easy removal of the lid by rotating the handle a few degrees to disengage the cams. The shutter opening mechanism is designed for smooth operation and is operated by a spring handle with a knuled knob. A flame exposure device (Gas test jet assembly) is mounted over the lid. The manually operated stirrer has flexible has a flexible shaft. The cup assembly is positioned in a cast iron air bath, fitted with a chrome plated brass top. The air bath is mounted on an upright which serves as a gas manifold. Valve controlled supply lines for adjustable flames are provided with pilot and test flames. This apparatus is used to determine Softening point of Bitumen. It is that temperature at which a sample of bituminous material loaded by a 9.5mm dia steel ball, drops a specified distance when heated under specified conditions. Specification :
